Cinefamily Fantastic Elastic 24-hour Holiday Telethon

Some of the greatest times I’ve had in a theatre occurred at The Silent Movie Theatre, now housed by The Cinefamily. I don’t live in Los Angeles anymore but I’m I’m on their email list. Week after week I see amazing things going on hundreds of miles away from me.

This is one of them.

Starting December 17th at 12:00pm, and continuing until we drop, this space will be alive with guests musical and otherwise, a cornucopia of contributions from filmmakers and animators from all over LA celebrating the Cinefamily we love, and all kinds of programming-in-public shenanigans. We will entertain the heck out of you, we will share with you everything we feel and all that we do to achieve our mission, and together we will imagine Cinefamily’s future and help it become real.

The Line-Up So Far — Telethon In Person Guests

  • A Conversation with Elliott Gould
  • Spike Jonze will do a Show & Tell session.
  • Doug Benson and surprise guests will do a specially-constructed multi-movie Movie Interruption.
  • No Age & Friends (including Lance Bangs, Doug Aitken, and Patrick O’Dell) will play, and curate a show at 1AM.
  • Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic Fields will host a program at 3AM that we’re calling FILMS YOU CANT GO TO SLEEP TO, with original ditties on the uke to intro each short film.
  • Jake Austin (Rocktober Magazine) will present a special video show on Outsider Music, hosted by Neil Hamburger, and followed by live performances by Guy Chookoorian & Paul Zone (of The Fast)
  • Jerry Beck will host “Saturday Morning Cartoons on Sunday Morning”
  • Jonathan Gold (L.A. Weekly’s Pulitzer Prize-winning food critic) will give a lecture on “Food and Film”
  • Thu Tran (Food Party) will show a new short film about her experiments in black-light food, and will set up a special black-lit restaurant on our backyard patio.
  • Psychedelic sitar god Iasos will ring in Sunday morning with a live set

If you live in LA, I urge you to attend this. Bring back photos to all us unable to be with you and the amazing Cinefamily gang. I’m kicking in a few bucks as a minor hat tip to greatness.

I always wanted to give a lecture at filmschools. You go in and you see all these fresh faces, and you say: ‘You! Stand up, tell me your story. Tell me what your film is going to be about.’ And they start, and you go: ‘Shut up and sit the fuck down!’ And if they do, you go: ‘You’re not ready.’ Because the film business is filled with shut-up and sit-the-fuck-down. You got to be able to tell your story in spite of sit-down and shut-the-fuck-up. If you are going to let something like that derail you, what hope do you have against transportation department? What hope do you have against development executives?

Stunning work. I’d love for nerds to be making more of these. It’s just perfection.
